‘Vortex’ public sculpture
Vortex was part of the 2006 Sculpture by the Sea Bondi exhibition. The sculpture was designed for easy erection and dismantling and stood on Tamarama beach for the two week exhibition.
Vortex is made of vertical logarithmic spirals within a logarithmic spiral floor plan. The participant moves through a door height opening into a space that contracts so that you are taken down onto the sand and crawl out with a new view of the world. This was my response to the childhood memory of being dumped in the surf and the feeling of fear and exhilaration and aliveness.
Currently, the sculpture (without the cover) frame is being resurrected at my home in Fernmount, NSW.
